THE AUGUSTINIANS

The Order of St. Augustine, or Augustinian Order, based upon the teaching of the Bishop of Hippo (354 - 430 A.D.), was founded in 1244, to live and promote the spirit of community as lived by the first Christian communities (Acts of the Apostles 4, 32-35). We are a group of men and women who, in the words of the rule we profess, "live together in harmony, being of one mind and one heart on the way to God." We are Christians who, captivated by the example of Saint Augustine, journey together, as we build our house and serve the Lord's people.

The Augustinians, not to be confused with the Augustinian Recollects (OAR), are involved in various apostolates - schools, parishes, museums, pastoral centers, and mission stations across 50 different countries in Africa, Asia-Pacific, Europe and the Americas.

Spain is one of the 50 countries where the Order is present. Its presence is manifested by the 4 Augustinian provinces, namely, The Province of El Escorial, The Province of St. Thomas of Villanova of Castille, The Province of the Most Holy Name of Jesus of Spain, and The Province of the Most Holy Name of Jesus of the Philippines, the mother province of the Augustinian Vicariate of the Orient.

THE AUGUSTINIAN VICARIATE OF THE ORIENT

The Augustinian Vicariate of the Most Holy Name of Jesus of the Orient, or commonly called as The Augustinian Vicariate of the Orient, is a circumscription of the Augustinian Province of the Most Holy Name of Jesus in the Philippines (established 1575). It embodies the missionary ideals of the Province in this part of the world and has accepted the challenge to restore the Order in India, to re-connect with the mission of the Order in China and to open new missionary fields in Asia while helping the Province in its international commitments. The seat and center of the Province of the Philippines is in Madrid but its mission covers at present various apostolate areas in eleven different countries in the Americas, in Europe, in Africa and in Asia.

In the Philippines, the Order through the Augustinian Vicariate of the Orient, runs a seminary churches, schools, a museum and several mission areas in the northern part of the country, while the other Augustinian territories in the country are under the jurisdiction of the Province of Sto. Niño de Cebu (established 1984).
